Financial management is an introductory course in corporate finance. The course is aimed to develop students’ fundamental knowledge and skills in making financial decisions. With a core purpose of building a solid foundation for making financial decisions, the course will develop the basic knowledge of the functions of different financial markets and institutions, time value of money, discounted cash flows, financial performance evaluation, valuations of bonds, stocks, and assets, capital budgeting and working capital management. In a broader context, the course will make students familiarised with the essential financial management tools to get aids for the understanding, assessing and solving financial managers’ problems. The undertaking of this course will result in positive outputs in terms of covering the basic building blocks of financial management. Therefore, the course considers creating values for the students through developing essential and transferrable skills to succeed as a financial manager.

Learning Objectives

1. Students will develop a rudimentary understanding of different types of financial markets and institutions. How money circulates from surplus units to deficit units and what role financial environment and intermediaries play in ensuring efficient capital allocation.
2. Students will acquire basic knowledge of major financial statements of businesses and the methods of fundamental analysis using ratios.
3. Students will gain knowledge on application of time value of money in financial management as well as in dealing with valuation problems of capital market securities.
4. Students will be able to evaluate capital projects and decisions rules associated with them.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Calculate & interpret activity, liquidity, solvency, profitability, and valuation ratios used in financial analysis.
2. Apply time value of money concepts to complex cash flow scenario.
3. Price bonds and other fixed-income financial asset.
4. Apply the capital asset pricing model to quantify the risk-return tradeoff.
5. Determine the fundamental price for preferred stock and common stock.
6. Apply techniques of managing working capital
7. Describe the basic principles of capital budgeting, explain how the evaluation and selection of capital projects is affected by mutually exclusive projects.

Samina Haque is a Senior Lecturer at BRAC Business School, BRAC University. She joined BRAC Business School in 2010. Samina has been teaching core finance courses that include International Finance, Financial Institutions, Securities Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Management and Introduction to Business. Samina brings with her considerable experiences in both corporate and development sectors. Prior to joining BRAC Business School, Samina worked for Emerging Markets Group, USA as NGO Sustainability Specialist in its NGO Service Delivery Program (NSDP) – a project funded by USAID. She also worked in Citibank N.A. and Standard Chartered Bank as Management Associate and Credit Analyst respectively. She is trained on Core Banking and Risk Analytics.
