Course Overview

This course is designed to introduce students to the rich and complex art and architecture of Bengal. During the semester we will trace Bengal history from ancient times to the beginning of modern era with special attention to Bengal’s socio-cultural developments. During this long journey Bengal shares many things with near and fur cultures, like many other cultures of the South Asian (widely known as Indian) civilization. South Asia has been the seat of great civilizations from time immemorial. The peoples of this region have produced magnificent art and architecture for thousands of years. This course will explore how this human civilization progresses and how far Bengal follows that rhythm.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the semester/course, students will demonstrate ability to: • Develop a working knowledge of the existing cultural heritage • Interpret role of society, religion and culture in the development of art and architecture for that period • Compare variations of styles between different regions and periods. • Illustrate examples of architectural buildings through diagrams and sketches. • Design and to create an understanding of architecture as a physical response to human need with a philosophical and cultural background

Mohammad Habib Reza

Mohammad Habib Reza is an architect and architectural historian. Presently he is an Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Khulna University in 2001 and PhD in architectural history and theory from Nottingham Trent University, UK in 2013. Later he joined as a Research Fellow in Nottingham Trent University and was involved in research projects funded by Nottingham Trent University and the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of Oman, for the documentation of traditional oasis settlements in Central Oman towards the delivery of culturally and technically informed Heritage Management Plans. He is also a founder member of the Centre for the study of Architecture and Cultural Heritage in India, Arabia and the Maghreb (ArCHIAM), based at Nottingham Trent University aims to provide an interdisciplinary research platform for historical and contemporary cultural developments across three interconnected global regions.
